I was delighted to find many of the Ruth Fielding series of books (circa 1913) on Kindle. It is an old series of books written by Alice B. Emerson for teen/young adult girls. The first one, Ruth Fielding of the Red Mill Or, Jasper Parloe's Secret , introduces Ruth, an orphan teenager who must go to live with her grouchy old uncle. He really doesn't want her, but she has no other place to go. He has an elderly housekeeper whom he took in from the poorhouse who befriends Ruth right away.The series of books chronicles Ruth's attempts to win the affection of her uncle and her many adventures with neighboring twins whom she meets upon arrival.
As a teenager, I first heard of the Ruth Fielding books in the 1960's when my mom's school teacher loaned them to me, two or three at a time. She had loaned them to my mom when my mom attended her classes in the 1920's. After I had finished reading many of them, the lovely lady decided to give me the set! I still have them packed away SOMEWHERE!!! I've now started reading them again, this time on my Kindle!
